The U.S. Department of State OIG announced that in December 2022, a man pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and will pay $535,643.83 in restitution for his part in a scheme to defraud the government.

OIG and other federal associates determined that the defendant, whose identity has not been released, and co-conspirator impersonated Department of State (Department) annuitants, misrepresented themselves to Department officials, and diverted annuity payments to an unknown third party. The defendant is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on March 2023.
