On February 9, 2023 at 01:15 PM EST the NIH announced that a single oral dose of the antibiotic azithromycin can lower the risk of postpartum sepsis and death among females who deliver vaginally by one-third, according to a large multi-country clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Just 1.6% of females in the study who received azithromycin during labor developed sepsis or passed away within six weeks after delivering their infants, compared to 2.4% of those women who received a placebo.
Azithromycin did not lessen the risk of newborn sepsis, stillbirth, or newborn death.
