Hepatitis A Outbreaks Occurring in the United States

Reports have emerged of increasing hepatitis A outbreaks through contamination of food and person-to-person contact. In recent months, the U.S. has experienced several widespread cases including a multistate outbreak related to organic strawberries. Additional caution is suggested for those considered part of high-risk groups such as drug users, homeless individuals, or men who engage in sexual activity with other men.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended in 1996 the use of immunization to prevent hepatitis A, with a focus on high-risk populations and those living in areas where the disease was particularly prevalent. This directive was extended 10 years later when ACIP suggested routine vaccination of all children nationwide. In recent years, however, outbreaks have been concentrated primarily among adults; as such, CDC has published recommendations targeting increased vaccinations among at-risk populations in an effort to limit the size, timeframe, and spread of person-to-person contamination.

This article provides further insight into Hepatitis A prevention and management initiatives within the US context.
