The California DMV is taking action against the fraudulent use of disabled parking permits

Starting June 30th, California is changing the process for renewing permanent disabled parking placards to prevent fraudulent use. Holders will need to sign a form every six years to verify that they are still alive and in need of the tag.

The first renewal cycle includes those who received their original permanent disabled person parking placard before January 2019. Disabled license plates and placards offer parking privileges to disabled people, veterans, and transportation organizations.

The new law means that holders will need to submit a free renewal form to the California DMV once every six years.

To renew, holders can sign and return the mailed renewal notice, complete the renewal form online, or renew online with the QR code printed on the mailed renewal notice.

The DMV will compare its placard records against the Social Security Administration’s master files of social security numbers to verify holders.

The biggest challenge is knowing where to send the new placards since people frequently change their addresses, but holders can update their addresses when they sign the renewal form.
