Police recover two loaded weapons at Highland High School in Utah, 2 students taken into custody

On June 5th, 2023, at around 1 p.m., security at Highland High School reported a suspicious car parked on school property to the Salt Lake City Police Department's School Resource Officers. Upon investigation, three students were found inside the car, two of whom tried to leave. The School Resource Officer called for backup before detaining the two students who tried to leave. 

Upon searching them, the officers found that both students were carrying loaded handguns, one of which had been reported stolen. The third student, who had fled from the car, was subsequently located and released to a legal guardian. The two students found in possession of firearms were arrested and will be booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. 

It is unknown how the students accessed the firearms and their intent remains unclear. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information can be released at this time due to the involvement of minors.
