On Monday, The James Beard Awards recognized chefs and restaurants from smaller cities and towns this year. Sly Fox Den Too’s Sherry Pocknett, located in Charlestown, Rhode Island, became the first Indigenous woman to win a James Beard for Best Chef: Northeast.
Oklahoma City's Grey Sweater also took home an award for the second time in the state's history. Additionally, Kin in Idaho won Best Chef: Mountain, marking the first time an Idaho restaurant has won. The newly added Outstanding Bakery category honored Yoli, a tortilleria in Kansas City, MO. In contrast to previous years where San Francisco, New York, and Chicago dominated the awards with 10 wins, this year they only received three.
Out of 22 categories, seven awards were given to restaurants and chefs in cities with populations under 350,000. Last year's America's Classic award went to Florence's Restaurant, which opened in 1952.
