Zurzuvae has been approved by the FDA to treat postpartum depression in adults. Until now, PPD treatment was only available through IV injections in certain healthcare facilities. PPD can be characterized by feelings of sadness or inadequacy, loss of energy, or even suicidal thoughts. It affects about 1 in 8 women, so screening for depression and getting the right diagnosis and treatment is crucial for both the mother and the infant, says Kaveeta P. Vasisht, M.D., Pharm.D, Associate Commissioner for Women’s Health, and Director, of the Office of Women’s Health (OWH).
