30 Homes Evacuated in Whittier Due to Gas Leak

On Thursday, September 14, Thrity homes occupying about 75 people were evacuated after a natural gas leak was reported in the 7500 block of Vicki Drive and Coolhurst Drive, in the city of Whittier.

 The Los Angeles County Fire Department, assisted by SoCalGas responded to the scene and conducted testing and repairs to ensure residents' air quality inside homes was safe, and as a result, the evacuation order was lifted and citizens returned to their homes.

The leak was initially reported at around 1:30 a.m., According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the cause of the leak was a ruptured gas line.

The Red Cross helped temporarily displaced families shelter in an evacuation center set up at Phelan Language Academy at 7150 Culley Avenue.

SoCalGas capped the 3-inch gas line around 8 a.m. No one was reported injured.
Further investigation into the cause of the ruptured gas line remains active.
