Born in Glasgow in 1933, McCallum came from a musical family. His father played violin and his mother played cello. At the age of 3, the family relocated to London. McCallum attended the Royal Academy of Music where he studied oboe before transitioning to theater after realizing his talents were better suited for that medium. However, due to his physical appearance, he faced challenges finding roles that matched him.
