The Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project team recently completed their second mission to remove marine debris from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. During the mission, they successfully removed over 126,000 pounds of debris from coral reefs and shorelines of the islands and atolls. Additionally, they were able to release seven sea turtles that had been caught in the debris.
This mission was a continuation of their work in July 2023 when they removed 86,100 pounds of debris from the same area. The project is supported by the NOAA Marine Debris Program and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
