Off-duty LAPD officer is 1 of 2 victims killed in Northridge collision; DUI suspect and 2 others injured.
Northridge— Police Officer Darrell Cunningham Shamily, of the West Los Angeles division and two passengers were involved in a traffic crash at the corner of Roscoe Boulevard and Lindley Avenue at roughly 1:15 AM. Shamily death was announced during a news conference by LAPD Chief Michel Moore, and The L.A. County Coroner's office, said.
Officer Shamily was off duty when the crash occurred; He is identified as one of two victims killed in the crash. The incident left three others hospitalized, including an off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, officers said on Saturday, November 4.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighter paramedics arrived to discover a fire hydrant was snipped by one of the automobiles. Upon further investigation, Shamily and two other passengers in a white Infiniti were driving northbound on Lindley Avenue when they were hit by a Black BMW, according to Officers. The motorist of the BMW was traveling up to a high speed of 100 mph and did not stop at a red light before colliding into the passenger side of the Infiniti, the police said.
Shamily and the occupant in the front seat of the Infiniti, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured victims were rushed to the hospital in grave condition.
As reported, the initial investigation indicated that the BMW's driver "was under the influence of alcohol at the time of this collision," Moore said, adding that the suspect would be booked for gross vehicular manslaughter "and additional charges as further evidence is gathered."
Before the news conference, Officers and coroner's officials were at the collision site, where an American flag was opened up in honor of the fallen officer.
