Dakota Johnson narrates a Sensational Portrait of controversial Sex Researcher Shere Hite,Directed by Nicole Newnham
The documentary film, "The Disappearance of Shere Hite," is directed by Academy Award nominee Nicole Newnham, who also directed the acclaimed film "Crip Camp". It is narrated and executive produced by Dakota Johnson. The film is produced by a team that includes Molly O'Brien, R.J. Cutler, Elise Pearlstein, Kimberley Ferdinando, and Trevor Smith.
The film has been selected for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is a tribute to Shere Hite, a pioneer who has had a significant impact on discussions related to gender, sexuality, and bodily autonomy. The documentary is also a cautionary tale about the treatment of women who dare to speak out on these issues.
Shere Hite's 1976 book, "The Hite Report," was a bestseller that revolutionized the way people talked about female sexuality. The book revealed the private experiences of thousands of anonymous survey respondents and challenged the American establishment. Despite its impact, Hite disappeared from public life. The film explores what might have happened to her.
The documentary has been nominated for three Critics Choice Documentary Awards in 2023, including Best Narration, Best Archival Documentary, and Best Biographical Documentary. The film will open on November 17th at IFC Center in New York.
