Belittling is a Big Deal

Image

Emotional and psychological abuse can take multiple forms, including belittling, which can be embodied as being judged, humiliation, blaming, trivializing, or telling cruel jokes. Please be aware, that belittling is no joking matter and is a tactic frequently used by abusers to make their victims feel, insignificant, or disrespected. This tactic damages a survivor’s confidence and sense of self-esteem.

And, as with many forms of abuse, it’s a tool abusers utilize to exercise control. The more you feel down about yourself, the more dependent you’ll be on your abuser to validate you—or, so they think.
