Traveling with babies and young children can be a source of stress for many parents. And when you add in the challenges of winter holidays, travel delays, a cranky child, and exposure to germs, it can make traveling an even messier experience.

Dr. Joanna Parga-Belinkie, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician and neonatologist who is currently expecting her third child, advises families to prepare for possible delays and acknowledges that traveling during the holidays can be tough.

"It's important to have realistic expectations," she suggests. "If possible, bring along friends or relatives who can provide assistance so you can work together as a team in caring for your child. And if that's not an option, plan ahead as much as possible, be patient with yourself, and remember that you will eventually get to your destination."

Dr. Parga-Belinkie also recommends avoiding travel with infants under six months old since they are at higher risk of illness and cannot receive vaccinations yet. Furthermore, newborns under two months old are particularly vulnerable to getting sick and most pediatricians advise against any travel before this age.

As a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Dr. Parga-Belinkie offers these valuable tips for ensuring safe travels during the holiday season.
