SACRAMENTO-Agency officials in California may momentarily turn wastewater into drinking water.
On Tuesday, The California Water Resources Control Board approved new regulations for turning water from washroom toilets and additional uses into drinking water.
State administrators assume the rules will aid in the drought-prone water conditions in California to enable a better dependable source of drinking water, making California the second state to authorize statewide rules for the direct use of recycled wastewater. Similar regulations were approved in Colorado in 2022.
The rules mandate water agencies notify customers before they start the process. Water agencies in Los Angeles, and San Diego currently have plans to recycle wastewater.
