The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified a new COVID variant called JN.1, which has been listed as a "variant of interest". Previously, the omicron subvariant was classified under its parent strain, BA.2.86, which raised concern among scientists due to its high number of mutations. Currently, the JN.1 variant is estimated to be responsible for 21% of new COVID cases in the United States, according to the CDC.
