Metrolink, the regional rail network, will suspend all services for four days starting Tuesday. During this time, the workers will clean, repair trains, and upgrade the network across all of Metrolink's seven lines, including the Arrow service in San Bernardino County. The train services will resume on December 30th.
Metrolink officials stated that the temporary suspension of service is necessary to complete the final phase of a three-year modernization project at LA Union Station, the central hub of the agency. The upgrade efforts aim to provide safer, more efficient service.
During the suspension, crews will replace outdated signal-relay technology from the 1930s with a modern system that will enable the agency to run multiple trains on multiple tracks, reducing delays and improving safety. Additionally, crews will perform concrete repairs on train platforms, perform thorough cleanings, and add more lighting in Union Station tunnels.
Track improvements will also be made on parts of the Antelope Valley and San Bernardino lines.
Metrolink officials stated that the state-of-good-repair projects across multiple lines will make the passenger rail experience safer and more reliable. The temporary suspension will not affect L.A. Metro buses, subways, and rail lines, which will continue operating normally.
Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner will also continue to operate during the closure, but those trains will bypass Union Station. Metrolink is not providing alternative transportation.
