LA’s Triple Berry Cake creater Sweet Lady Jane Unexpectedly Closed All Six Bakery's

Sweet Lady Jane, the legendary bakery in Los Angeles, closed all six of its locations on December 31, 2023, after being in business for 35 years. In a message on Instagram and the bakery's website, the owners expressed their gratitude to their loyal customers but also cited challenges in running a bakery in California, including the high cost of leases and paying a living wage without increasing the cost of goods. The closure came as a surprise, especially since the Encino store had recently undergone renovations, and there were plans to expand into Marina Del Rey and Larchmont. The West Hollywood shop had already closed at the end of last year for renovations.

The founder, Jane Lockhart, opened the first Sweet Lady Jane on Melrose Avenue in 1988 and gained a strong following for her Triple Berry cake. This three-layer cake is made of yellow butter cake filled with lightly sweetened whipped cream and a variety of fresh berries.
