Man injured in Downtown Apartment Fire

On January 5, 2024, at 5:35 am, a victim was injured in a fire that occurred at 501 E 7th Street in, Downtown, Los Angeles.

The building's fire alarm monitoring service operated effectively. 30 LAFD firefighters reached the scene and observed fire erupting in the six-story center hallway of the apartment building and discovered the flames were confined, within a unit on the third floor. Fire crews extinguished the fire in 17 minutes.

A 69-year-old man inside the unit sustained an acute (second-degree) burn wound to 30% of his body and was transported by LAFD medics to a regional burn care facility in acute condition. No additional injuries have been reported.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reminds residents that not all building fire alarm systems are monitored. If you witness evidence of fire or hear a fire alarm, act promptly to escape harm and call 9-1-1 immediately to ensure the fire department is aware and responding. The cause of this fire remains under active investigation.
